Tony Stark, the genius and playboy billionaire behind the Iron Man suit, has always been one of the most interesting Marvel characters. From his humble beginnings as the founder of Stark Industries, to his life as one of the richest men in the world, here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Tony Stark. 1) He was a self-made billionaire

With all of his achievements, it's hard to believe there are still some things you might not know about him. Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Iron Man. 1) At age 3 he was injured by a piece of shrapnel that fell off a truck carrying hazardous material. It cut through his chest near his heart and exited through one of his lungs. His father Howard discovered the Arc Reactor technology which saved Tony's life in Afghanistan when he was 17 years old.

Tony Stark’s original name wasn’t Anthony Edward Stark. His father, Howard, was a genius inventor and engineer who created the world-famous Iron Man suit that would eventually be given to his son. When he was only 17 years old, Tony’s father died in an accident at one of his own facilities, leaving him with an inheritance that would shape the rest of his life. Not only did he inherit his father's company, but also the secrets that went along with it. He developed technology for S.H.I.E.L.D., studied engineering, and graduated from MIT at just 21 years old (with honors).
3) He was based on a real person (sort of)
Tony Stark was based on a real person, but not really. He was based on physicist and engineer Theodore Ted Hall. In the comics, Ted Hall is captured by the enemy and forced to design missile defense systems. Like Ted Hall, Tony Stark is captured by the enemy and forced to design weapons for them. The only difference is that Tony escapes and has Iron Man suit ready to fight in Afghanistan. One of the first enemies he fights in Afghanistan is Nick Fury who doesn’t seem too happy about it. Tony later learns that he’s part of an experiment with super-soldiers created during World War II called Operation: Rebirth which also includes Captain America, Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver (possible), Black Widow aka Natasha Romanova and more!

Downey Jr. was the first choice for the role of Iron Man, but he almost didn’t get it. He was fired from the film Chaplin and his agent asked Marvel Studios to reconsider him for the part of Iron Man. His primary method was wearing an iron suit that covered his entire body and head, including his face so that no one could see him in the armor. Other times he would wear sunglasses or a wig of long brown hair to disguise himself. But, eventually it became too much for Tony because people started recognizing him when he wore these disguises. So now, instead of covering up his face, he covers up all the weapons on his suit with special holographic projections that make it appear as if nothing is there.

One of the most obvious connections is to Robert Downey Jr. who played him in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron; however there are also some parallels between him and Hugh Jackman's character Wolverine from the X-Men movies. Even their arcs with alcoholism seem remarkably similar - they're both haunted by their pasts and want nothing more than to put them behind them. However, neither can ever escape the demons inside themselves.
