Huang Xiaoming was born in 1962, making him 54 years old as of this writing. He is a native of Sichuan Province, China. He first attended the Beijing Dance Academy before transferring to the Beijing Film Academy where he majored in acting. In 1983, he took part in China's national dance competition and won second place for two consecutive years. His big break came with Zhang Yimou's Red Sorghum (1987), which launched his career into stardom. After that, he starred in many films including To Live (1994) which garnered him international fame and an award at Cannes; Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000); Hero (2002) ; Curse of the Golden Flower (2006).

Huang is also a Cantonese opera performer, and has been performing since he was 9 years old. He does not only perform as an actor, but also performs as a female actor. In order to prepare for his role in The Story of the Stone, he had to learn how to sing in Mandarin from scratch.
